– The announcement of fuel subsidy removal and increase in fuel price has generated controversy
 – Reacting to the news, Governor Nasir El-Rufai called on Nigerians to remain patient
 – The governor had participated fully in the protest against fuel subsidy removal in 2012 The Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai has appealed to Nigerians to remain calm following the removal of fuel subsidy and an increase in the price of petrol from N86.50 to N145 per litre. He expressed optimism that the supply of petroleum products will improve, Premium Times reports.

This was contained in a statement released by the Kaduna state government house.
The statement read: “The Kaduna state government wishes to appeal for calm. It commends the people for the orderly response to the fuel price adjustment by the Federal Government, and requests their continued patience for the supply of petroleum products to improve.” Speaking on the arrest of beggars in the state, the governor said the prohibition of begging law will not take effect until after 60 days.

“The Kaduna State Government has not directed the police to enforce the begging law, which is not due to come into force yet. Malam Nasir El-Rufai has repeatedly stated that rehabilitation opportunities would be offered for the disabled. The State Executive Council has just approved a Disability Policy, which is a necessary precursor to the drafting of any bill or other measures to promote the rights of the disabled,” he said. Recall that El-Rufai was a prominent member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), was one of the people who spoke against the removal of fuel subsidy in 2012, during the former administration of Goodluck Jonathan. He was one the leaders of the Occupy Nigeria protest of 2012 against the fuel subsidy removal and the increase in fuel price that year.

The announcement on Wednesday, May 11, by the minister of state for petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu that fuel subsidy has been removed has been trailed by controversial reactions. Some have condemned the price hike, and have questioned the sincerity of politicians who opposed the policy in the past. However, some others, especially members of the ruling party are in support of the latest decision.
